What makes Tails on Trails different

There are plenty of dog walkers around. What we focus on is doing it properly.

Pack management matters
We keep groups well matched and well managed so everyone can relax and have fun.

Safety systems you can feel good about
We use a practical, safety-first approach and build reliability over time.

Real-world dog experience
We’re not just “taking dogs for a run”. We’re reading the group, managing energy, and making sure it stays positive.

Training-focused (with the qualifications to back it up)

A lot of dogs don’t just need more exercise, they need better structure. That’s why we’re genuinely training focused, not just “take them for a run and hope for the best”.

Our team understands dog behaviour and learning, and we use every adventure as a chance to build the basics that matter in real life, like calm pack manners, checking in, and reliable recall over time. It means your dog gets the fun stuff and the skills that make them easier (and safer) to live with.

Qualifications within our team include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Zoology

  • Diploma in Canine Behaviour

  • Bachelor of Science in Animal Management

  • Advanced Certificate in Canine Nutrition

  • Canine First Aid Certificate

How it works

1) Enquire
Tell us your suburb, your dog’s age/breed, and what days you’re hoping for.

2) We match your dog to the right pack
We’ll ask a few questions around social skills, recall, and anything we should know.

3) Trial Adventure

Your dog comes along for a trial so we can see how they settle in, how they travel, and how they go in a group.

4) Secure a regular pack spot

If the trial is a good fit, we’ll lock in a regular day (or days) so your dog has a consistent routine and a familiar pack.

Our adventure dog walking service

Your dog gets more than a footpath stroll.

What’s included:

  • Pickup and drop-off

  • A big outdoor adventure with a managed group

  • Lots of movement, sniffing, exploring, and social time

  • A calm, structured approach so the pack stays friendly and safe

Best suited to:

  • High-energy dogs who need more than a quick walk

  • Dogs who love other dogs and enjoy being part of a crew

  • Dogs that require extra socialising to build confidence

  • Owners who want a reliable routine (and a tired dog at the end of the day)

  • Not sure if your dog is a fit? Send an enquiry anyway and we’ll be honest.

FAQs

Do you do pickup and drop-off?
Yes, pickup and drop-off is part of the service.

How do you choose which dogs go together?
We match dogs based on size, energy, social style, and what keeps the pack calm and safe.

My dog’s recall isn’t perfect. Can they still join?
Possibly. Tell us where things are at and we’ll let you know what options make sense.

What if my dog is nervous or a bit reactive?
Please mention it when you enquire. Some dogs just need the right setup, and sometimes we’ll recommend a different pathway first.

Do you take puppies?
We have a minimum age of 8 months old, but some dogs require more maturity, so it's a case by case basis.

What happens in bad weather?
Dunedin does what it wants. We’ll make smart calls based on safety and conditions.

Can you walk two dogs from the same home?
Yes, as long as both dogs are suitable for pack adventures.

How often can my dog come?
Some dogs come weekly, others multiple times per week. It depends on availability and what your dog needs.
